Freelancing
For INDIANS
Big Freelance Mistake
- stop-start marketing.
This affliction is endemic through the freelance community, and is a direct result of the
unpredictable nature of our lifestyle. It’s a major concern because it has the effect of
forcing your rates down and trapping you in a never-ending feast-famine cycle.
It happens like this:
• you reach the end of a project, and realise there is no other work on the horizon.
• because you need work fast, you go into intensive marketing mode
• you send out mailers, ring cold prospects, follow every lead you can find and
eventually
• someone offers you a project, but at a lower rate than you usually accept
• you now need some cash urgently, so you accept the low rate
• now you’re so busy with the new project, you’ve got no time for marketing
• then you reach the end of the project, and realise there is no other work on the
horizon.
To escape from this cycle, you need a strategy that puts you in a position of strength.
The only way to achieve this is to create a marketing campaign that continues working
for you - week in, week out.
Because you are continuously advertising your presence in the market, you can create a steady flow of potential projects.
This means that even when you’re busy, new business enquiries will come rolling in. And
then you are in a very different position. Because you already have work in hand, you’re
not under pressure to accept lower fees.
You can hold out for your optimum rate......or even try for an increase. Your earnings will remain high, which means you can
allocate a budget for future marketing leading to even more project opportunities.
As you can see, we have now escaped the Feast-Famine Cycle and created a cycle of
success instead. No longer trapped in a downward spiral, we have the opportunity to build
an increasingly profitable and successful career.
In order to achieve this, you need to allocate sufficient time and budget to
implementing your marketing campaign. Allow at least a morning or afternoon each work
to work on promoting your business. And ensure that you put aside enough money to
cover all your marketing expenses.
Initially, this may seem to be an expenditure of time and money that you can’t afford. But
over a period of time, this policy will pay increasing dividends, as you build up long-term
freelance business.
